Southern Feed Ingredients

At Southern Feed Ingredients we produce mold inhibitors to protect your animal feed. The dangers from mycotoxins and nutrient depletion from mold growth threaten the health of the animals we feed, and Mold Star products are designed to keep feed fresh.

Mold Star Dry, Mold Star Liquid and Mold Star Plus HB are part of our line of blended mold inhibitors. A blend of organic acids in the correct proportion for broad spectrum control of mold and yeast growth in animal feed.

Southern Feed Ingredients was founded by Paul Luce in 2007. We sell many different products all over the country, including flavors and antioxidants, but our main focus is our Mold Star line of mold inhibitors.

Mold Star products are cost effective ammoniated organic acids designed to reduce mold growth in animal feeds and ingredients. Preventing mold growth prevents mycotoxin formation. The species of molds that form toxins number in the hundreds but for feed control purposes major fungi divide into two groups differing in several characteristics. For example, some are very well controlled by propionic acid but not acetic acid, while others respond in the opposite manner. Mold Star is a blend of both acids in the optimal ratio to control a broad spectrum of common feed molds. These products come in liquid and dry formulations buffered with ammonium hydroxide to reduce corrosion.

Mold Star Dry

A 55% total acid dry mold inhibitor effective against all classes of molds and wild yeasts commonly found in feedstuffs. This is our best selling inhibitor and is used in many different feeds for all species where a dry mold inhibitor is desired. Normally this product is used at 2 to 4 lbs per ton but sometimes at higher levels in severe conditions. Widely used in many animal feeds.

Mold Star Liquid

A 65% total acid mold inhibitor where a liquid product can be handled. Effective against all classes of molds and yeasts commonly found in feedstuffs. Delivers more Propionic acid per lb than the dry product. Useful in the same applications as the dry if the user has a spray delivery system.

Mold Star Plus HB

An 80% total acid liquid mold inhibitor for maximum protection. Effective against all classes of molds and wild yeasts commonly found in feedstuffs. Delivers more propionic acid and acetic acid than our other products but is well buffered for ease of handling.

Mold Star Products are the Best Value in Mold Inhibitors for Animal Feed

A mold inhibitor is designed to reduce mold and yeast growth in animal feeds. No mold inhibitor will remove toxins already present in feedstuffs, but the prevention of ongoing mold growth will keep new toxins from forming.

Mold Star products are a a blend of 2 and 3 carbon organic acids (acetic and propionic respectively) designed to reduce mold growth in animal feeds.

Different molds respond very differently to organic acids, which is why we strongly recommend our blended mold inhibitors over a single acid mold inhibitor.

Propionic acid is very effective against Aspergillus molds - most typically found in the warmer months. However, fusarium and wild yeast can grow all year long as they flourish best in cooler temperatures, and are much better treated with acetic acid. See our research pages for greater detail on this.

Mold Star products are designed as an optimal ratio of these organic acids to provide year round and broad spectrum control of mold growth in animal feeds.

All Mold Star products are made under Safe Feed/Safe Food and HAACP standards and are sourced and manufactured entirely within the United States.

If you need a mold inhibitor, Mold Star is the best and most cost effective option you have. â€‹

What are the Primary Losses from Molds and Yeasts?

 - Immunosuppression

 - Dietary Energy

 - Palatability (DMI)

 - Amino Acid Loss

 - Vitamin Loss

 - Intestinal malabsorption

The molds most commonly found in feedstuffs are Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium - with many species of each genus, and hundreds of potential toxins.

In addition to these - wild yeast, with several species of the genus Saccharomyces, are commonly found, especially in forages.

If you SEE a mold, it is typically Aspergillus or Penicillium. The others are less likely to be visible.

If TMR is getting hot, the problem is typically wild yeast.

We have many decades of industry experience solving just these problems. We'd be happy to talk to you about keeping your feed healthy and how we can help.
